This week, the 75-year-old author finally shared some surprisingly positive (albeit contradictory) news about his long-awaited book.
In an update on his Not a Blog page, Martin revealed that he has made progress on “Winds of Winter” and has even produced new pages. However, he also noted that writing has not been as easy as he expected. “I’ve found writing difficult,” Martin admitted, despite having made progress on both “Winds” and “Blood and Fire”Still, he expressed frustration at not writing more, noting that while he has made progress, there is still a long way to go.
“Writing was difficult, and while I produced some new pages in both The Winds of Winter (yes) and Blood and Fire (the sequel to Fire and Blood, the second part of my Targaryen story), I would have liked to produce many more.”

Martin’s struggle to find “solace” in writing has been compounded by his involvement in multiple television projects. His work as an executive producer on shows such as Dark Winds and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms It has taken a lot of his time and energy, which he has enjoyed, but other unnamed projects have not been as fun.
“My various television projects took up most of those months”she confessed, acknowledging that although some of her work was on television projects. The stress, she says, “kept mounting,” further hampering her ability to focus on her novels. Recently, Martin criticized the production process of House of the Dragon on another blog which he later deleted after, presumably, a word in his ear from HBO.
Fans have grown accustomed to delays in Martin’s work, but this update provided some hope, as the author stated that “Winds will be even longer than its predecessors, “Dance of Dragons” and “A Storm of Swords”two of the longest books in the series. Martin has previously described “Winds” as a “big, big book” and hinted that the final two installments could eclipse the previous entries in terms of scope and complexity.
