Davis Cup: Marterer scores first point for men’s tennis against Chile

Maximilian Marterer puts in another convincing performance. He also wins his second singles match in the Davis Cup group phase – and ensures a top starting position.

Tennis pro Maximilian Marterer has given the German Davis Cup team the chance to win their second time in Zhuhai, China. The 29-year-old won clearly against Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera 6:1, 6:3, thus securing the first of two necessary points in the duel with the South Americans.

Yannick Hanfmann has been nominated for the second singles. The final doubles match will be contested by US Open finalists Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz.

Hopeful move to Malaga is getting closer

With the hoped-for second victory in the second group match, the German Tennis Association’s selection could take a huge step towards qualifying for the final round. In November, the best eight nations will play for the prestigious team title in Malaga.

The two best teams in the group of four will advance. The team coached by Michael Kohlmann, who was severely weakened by a lack of replacements, started the group phase on Tuesday with a 3-0 win against Slovakia.

Unexpected opponent for Marterer

On paper, Chile is the strongest team in the group. However, the South Americans lost their opening match against the USA and competed in the singles without top-30 player Nicolas Jarry.

So Marterer got Barrios Vera as his opponent. The left-hander was convincing against the world number 162, just as he had done against Slovakia. The world number 104 clearly dominated the first set. The second set was evenly matched until it was 3:3. Then Marterer took the Chilean’s serve to make it 4:3 and won the match after 1 hour and 24 minutes.
