Despite Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 opening victory in the Champions League against FC Bruges, Marcel Sabitzer has expressed his frustration with his current role at last year’s finalists. The Austrian international is unhappy about being used in the more offensive wing position instead of in defensive midfield. “The six is better,” said Sabitzer with an embarrassed expression and curtly on Wednesday evening after BVB’s victory over the Belgian champions.
His current area of operation is “not the ideal position,” said the 30-year-old. Regarding communication with coach Nuri Sahin, Sabitzer said: “We are always in contact. But not in detail. He is the coach, he makes the decisions. That has to be respected.”
Sahin himself expressed understanding after Sabitzer’s statements. “Sabi is absolutely out of the question for me. He is a very, very important player for us,” said the BVB coach. “He will also play a lot of games at number six.” Against Bruges, however, he “absolutely” wanted him to play against full-back Maxim de Cuyper. “There are situations where we need him in other positions,” Sahin continued.
