Currently, the gap between men’s and women’s salaries is estimated to be approximately 23%.

On September 18, International Equal Pay Day is “celebrated” around the world. The difference between men’s and women’s salaries is noticeable. Currently, it is estimated to be at average at 23% that of men being superior.

For this reason, the Sustainable Development Goals included in the 2030 Agenda address gender equality as the main issue, in order to tackle this situation. The idea is to promote economic growth with equal pay for both men and women and to achieve empowerment for women, starting from girls.

Wage Gap

Why is International Equal Pay Day celebrated every 18th of September?

This commemoration arose through the United Nations Organization (UN), with the aim of raising awareness about the discrimination suffered by women in the workplace with regard to wages. Highlighting the importance of perceiving the same pay for the same work.

Although the estimated gap is 23%, it should be noted that in the poorest areas this inequality increases, constituting a clear disadvantage for women in obtaining resources, opportunities and access to the labor market in general. The organization that is responsible for making this problem visible and fighting it is the Equal Pay International Coalition, that depends on the International Labour Organization (ILO)
