The Buenos Aires Legislature approved a law for public employees to receive training in disability

The Buenos Aires Legislature approved this Thursday the law of Accessible Statewhich consists of requiring public employees of the city of Buenos Aires to undergo training in disability matters.

The standard was approved after obtaining 52 votes in favor in the session, and only 1 against from the legislator of United Republicans, Yamil Santoro. In addition, there were abstentions from Lucía Montenegro, Pilar Ramírez and Leonardo Saifert, from La Libertad Avanza (LLA).

The project, which had been presented by the deputy Juan Manuel Valdesof Union for the Homeland (UxP), together with Maria Luisa Gonzalez Estevarenaof the PRO, establishes that those who perform tasks in the public sphere must be trained to deal with disabled people, in accordance with what is determined by the convention on the rights of people with disabilities.

It should be noted that, although it covers public employees of the Executive Branch, it also covers those who work in the Legislative and Judicial branches.

They said it was “a historic day”

Valdés highlighted: “This is a historic day for people with disabilities in the City”The Peronist legislator considered that this norm eliminates “the attitudinal and communication barriers that these people face every day,” according to a statement.

“We are going to build an accessible state that includes people with disabilities instead of being a disabling environment,” he added.

On his X account, he wrote: ”After 4 years we approved mandatory disability training. With this law, We will have trained public agents in the three branches of the State to end discrimination in public offices. I share my words with you”, attaching a video of him in the venue.

What is the Accessible State Law about?

Valdés himself, on his Instagram account, gave details about the recently approved law: “We presented a project so that all public employees have to be trained in disability matters.”

”In the City, 1 in 4 people with disabilities face barriers (attitudinal, communicational, among others) in public offices. With this project, we are going to eliminate these obstacles to have more inclusive and non-judgmental care,” he described.

According to the legislator, the law proposes mandatory training on disability for all public workers of the Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Judicial Branch.

It also includes giving trainings that follow the guidelines of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and finally ensure the participation of people with disabilities throughout the training process.
