Why is Student’s Day celebrated every September 21?
The commemoration arose in honor of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. It is not the first date that is held in his honor. There is also the 11th, known as Teacher’s Day in commemoration of his birth. The date of the 21st refers to the day on which the remains of the hero arrived from Asunción, Paraguay, where he died.
This celebration arose in 1902, when the president of the student center of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Salvador Debenedetti, chose September 21 to honor the man who promoted literacy, promoted public, free and compulsory educationand managed to increase the country’s student body from 30,000 to 110,000 students.
