Formula 1: Norris takes Singapore pole ahead of Verstappen

An accident involving last year’s winner Carlos Sainz in Singapore brought the tension in qualifying to a head. Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was unlucky. Rival Lando Norris raced to pole position.

McLaren driver Lando Norris has secured pole position for the Formula 1 race in Singapore. The World Championship runner-up relegated the strengthened world champion Max Verstappen to second place on the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Norris also benefited from the fact that the Red Bull star’s fastest race lap was cancelled after an accident involving last year’s winner Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari.

For Norris, it was the fifth pole of the season. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton came third in the Mercedes. Nico Hülkenberg finished in an outstanding sixth place in the weak Haas.

An accident involving last year’s winner Sainz in his Ferrari less than four minutes into the final knockout lap put additional pressure on the other drivers. The Spaniard was able to get out of his car himself after the rear of his car hit the guardrail. Verstappen was unlucky because a double yellow card was shown at that point and his fastest lap was cancelled. The drivers must reduce their speed significantly during this signal.
