The Munich team completely dismantled Bremen on the fourth matchday of the Bundesliga. Freiburg and Union also won. Kiel saved their first Bundesliga point late in Bochum.
FC Bayern impressively continued its winning streak even after a short-term injury to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The Munich team beat the almost helpless SV Werder Bremen 5-0 (2-0) away from home. They celebrated their fourth win in four league games under new coach Vincent Kompany and remain top of the table.
SC Freiburg moved up to second place in the table with nine points thanks to a 3-0 (0-0) win at 1. FC Heidenheim. Union Berlin beat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 2-1 (2-0) at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei – and is therefore still unbeaten. In the duel between the promoted teams, who had not scored any points up to that point, Holstein Kiel saved its first Bundesliga point at VfL Bochum thanks to a late goal to make it 2-2 (1-2).
In the evening match, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 (1-0). On Sunday, champions Bayer Leverkusen will play Wolfsburg, Stuttgart against Dortmund – and St. Pauli against Leipzig. At the start of the 4th matchday, Mainz 05 won 3-2 in Augsburg on Friday evening.
Bayern continue to lead the Bundesliga
In Bremen, Manuel Neuer caused a stir before kick-off. He had to sit out. His thigh had shown a slight reaction, the record champions said. Neuer sustained a minor injury on Tuesday evening in the 9:2 Champions League win against Dinamo Zagreb.
Sven Ulreich moved into goal for him and initially had little to do. His teammates had almost 80 percent possession in the first quarter of an hour. Michael Olise scored first (23′), before Jamal Musiala (32′) struck less than ten minutes later. In the second half, Harry Kane (57′), Olise (60′) increased the lead and Serge Gnabry scored the final goal in the 65th minute.
Third defeat in four games for TSG Hoffenheim
Union got off to a flying start in Berlin. The hosts took the lead in the fourth minute through Tom Rothe. 120 seconds later, coach Bo Svensson’s team were two goals ahead against a disappointing Hoffenheim side. Wooyeong Jeong scored the next early goal. The visitors ended up suffering their third defeat of the season, although Marius Bülter (67′) managed to pull one back.
Kiel’s first point in the 1st league
The Storks took the lead in Bochum in the 15th minute thanks to a goal by Benedikt Pichler, but the game slipped away from them. Before half-time, VfL turned the game around with goals from Mats Berg (22nd) and Lukas Daschner (35th). But Kiel held on: in the 89th minute, Shuto Machino saved the league newcomer’s first point in the top division.

Freiburgers turn up the heat in the second half
Ritsu Doan and Vincenzo Grifo led SC Freiburg to victory against 1. FC Heidenheim. The Breisgau team won 3-0 (0-0) after the break thanks to three goals within eleven minutes and remain in the top group after the away win. Freiburg had more of the game over the entire match. In Freiburg’s club history, Heidenheim was the last of 41 first division opponents against whom they had not yet won.
Frankfurt three points behind Bayern
Eintracht Frankfurt is still up in the table after its home win. The goals in the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach were scored by Hugo Larsson in the 31st minute and Omar Marmoush in the 80th. With three wins in a row from the first four games and nine points, Frankfurt have climbed to third place in the table. League leader FC Bayern has three points more.
For Eintracht, it was a successful warm-up for the start of the reformed Europa League next Thursday against Viktoria Pilsen. The guests from Mönchengladbach remain with just three points out of a possible twelve – and are currently in 14th place.
