Roberto Cortes Condethe “father of Argentine economic history”, died at the age of 92 at his home in San Isidro. This was confirmed in X, Pablo Gerchunoff, another prominent author and academic.

“Roberto Cortes Conde, the father of Argentine economic history, academic rigor and commitment to reality, the teacher of us all, has passed away,” Gerchunoff said, while this morning, from the political and economic side, deputy José Luis Espert posted on the same network: “I just learned of the death of the great economist and historian Roberto Cortes Conde. Also, an extraordinary person. My condolences to family and friends. May he rest in peace.”

Who was Roberto Cortés Conde?

Cortés Conde was born on February 5, 1932 in Buenos Aires and spent much of his childhood in Paraná, the capital of Entre Ríos. In his youth he graduated in law from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and completed a postgraduate degree in Sociology at the same university.

He was a Full Professor of Political Economy at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the UBAvisiting professor at the University of Chicago and Robert Kennedy Professor at Harvard University. He has also taught at the Catholic University of Argentina, the UBA and the University of San Andrés.

Among his extensive bibliographic production, the following stand out: The Political Economy of 20th Century ArgentinaWorld Economic History. From the Middle Ages to the Modern Day, Progress and Decline of the Argentine Economy, and, more recently, “Perón’s Economy”, which had its second edition this year, which also included the authors Gerardo della Paolera, Laura D’Amato and Javier Ortiz Batalla.

Cortés Conde was Honorary President of the International Association of Economic History. He has been a Full Member of the National Academy of Economic Sciences and the National Academy of History since 1986. He received the First National Prize for History 1986/89 and the Order of Isabel La Católica, Kingdom of Spain. He was also a personal friend of great Argentine historians such as Tulio Halperín Donghi, Ezequiel Gallo and Natalio Botana.

Cortés Conde will be laid to rest this Sunday from 12 to 2 pm at Avenida Maipú 2860 and will be buried at the Pilar Memorial.
