Primera División: National goalkeeper ter Stegen substituted due to injury

Marc-André ter Stegen immediately grabs his knee. The German national goalkeeper of FC Barcelona suffers an injury – he cannot even leave the field.

National soccer goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen may have seriously injured his knee during FC Barcelona’s 5-1 (3-0) victory over FC Villarreal. The 32-year-old landed on his right leg while defending following an opponent’s corner shortly before half-time and immediately fell to the grass. The Barça captain had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Coach Hansi Flick, who scored the sixth victory in six league games, looked on with concern.

A diagnosis was still pending on Sunday evening. Ter Stegen’s club initially only reported that the goalkeeper had been substituted due to injury.

The former Bundesliga professional is the new number one of the German national team following the retirement of Manuel Neuer. The DFB selection will play in the Nations League in October in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against the Netherlands.
