Marc-André ter Stegen immediately grabs his knee. Screams can be heard. The German national goalkeeper suffers a knee injury that could slow him down for a long time.
National soccer goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen may have seriously injured his knee during FC Barcelona’s 5-1 (3-0) victory over FC Villarreal. The 32-year-old hit his right leg while defending following an opponent’s corner shortly before half-time and immediately fell to the grass. The Barça captain had to be carried off the field on a stretcher and was then taken to hospital.
A diagnosis was still pending on Sunday evening. According to Spanish media reports, ter Stegen could be out for months, which would also be a heavy blow for national coach Julian Nagelsmann. The reports have not yet been confirmed.
“We are very happy about the win, but in truth we are sad because I believe it is a serious injury,” said coach Hansi Flick during the press conference after his sixth win in six league games. Earlier on the streaming service DAZN, the former national coach said: “We have to wait. It will be a serious injury. You could see that immediately when he was lying on the field.”
Former Bundesliga professional ter Stegen is the new number one of the German national team following the retirement of Manuel Neuer. The DFB selection will play in the Nations League in October in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against the Netherlands.
