Emigrating to Germany: What is it for and how to apply for a Green Card

This is often used as an example of economic stability and job security.

The possibility of finding work abroad is often tempting for young Argentines. On this occasion, it appears Germany as a country that offers great opportunities due to its large job offerquality of life and economic stability that it has.

There is an option to be able to settle in the country and get a job known as German Green Cardwhich is required for non-European citizens. It is quite similar to the United States Green Card, although with some particularities that we will discuss below.

Emigration: What is the Green Card in Germany?

This is a permit granted by the German Government and its purpose is to provide non-European skilled workers with the opportunity to settle in Germany for a year and find employment during their stay.

In Spanish, it is known as an “opportunity card” while in German the term is “Chancenkarte.” It is based on a points system according to the worker’s qualifications in terms of professional experience, age, knowledge, command of the German language and ties to the country.

Emigration: How to apply for a Green Card in Germany

This document came into force on July 1, 2024. Therefore, from that date onwards it is possible to request it, although there is a number of limited places. Applications must be submitted to the German embassy in the applicant’s country. The exact number of vacancies is not known.

The permit can be obtained in two waysFirstly, by proving the full equivalence of a foreign qualification, to be considered qualified personnel, or alternatively, by proving a university degree or at least two years of vocational training and knowledge of English or German.

The card will be granted for a maximum period of one year as long as the solvency to remain in the country can be demonstrated.
