Nucleoelectrica Argentina, the company in charge of the operation of the country’s nuclear power plants, announced today that necessary funds have been secured to carry forward the Atucha I life extension projecta strategic milestone for the nuclear development of Argentina. The total cost of the renovation project amounts to $670 million.

The announcement was made by the new president of the company, Alberto Lamagnawho confirmed that the plant’s maintenance shutdown will begin on September 29, the day it will end its first operating cycle after 50 years of energy generation.
“The project will allow Atucha I operate for 20 more yearsensuring its contribution to the national energy matrix and promoting the development of technical capabilities that position Argentina in the global nuclear services market,” said Lamagna, who also highlighted the commitment of the national government to “strengthen and expand Argentine nuclear potentialin a context of global revitalization of this type of energy, which offers development opportunities in the incorporation of private capital”.

Atucha I must carry out a life extension shutdown that will last 30 months.

Atucha I, like any industrial installation, has a design useful life that marks the period during which its components and equipment can operate safely and efficiently. Once this cycle has been completed, a stop life extensionwhich will last 30 months and will allow the maintenance, inspections and improvements necessary for the plant to operate safely for a new cycle.
This entire process will be carried out in accordance with what is dictated by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, an organization dedicated to regulation and inspection of this activity, which is responsible for issuing the license that enables Nucleoeléctrica Argentina to operate its facilities.

The Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear plant in Latin Americalocated in the town of Lima, province of Buenos Aires. Inaugurated in 1974, it has a PHWR (Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor) type reactor and an installed power of 362 MW.
