The leadership of the Italian football club “Genoa” fired the Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko from the post of head coach. This was announced on January 15 by the press service of the club.
The club thanks the coach and his assistants for the hard work they have done in recent months.
The editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian magazine “Football” Artem Frankov noted that the football club chose “not the best moment to dismiss Shevchenko.”
“Firstly, in Italy they don’t take cup matches very seriously if we are talking about the initial stages. Secondly, in the match with Milan, Andrey’s team played with dignity. Apparently, both sides realized that further cooperation between the parties is futile, ”he said in an interview with Sport-Express.
Shevchenko, 45, took over the team on November 7, 2021. Under his leadership, the athletes played 11 matches, where they won once and drew three times with seven defeats.
Genoa are 19th in Serie A with 12 points.
The coach’s contract was calculated until June 30, 2024.
Previously, from July 2016 to August 2021, Shevchenko led the Ukrainian national team. Then the team scored 25 victories, 13 draws and suffered 14 defeats. The Ukrainian national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but qualified for the European Championship 2020, where it reached the quarterfinals.
On January 5, 2022, it became known that the Krasnodar football club terminated the contract with the head coach of the team Viktor Goncharenko. The reasons for this decision are not specified. It is also unknown who will take this post.
