Conflict in Lebanon: UN head expressed his “total support” for the ceasefire proposal

Given the escalation in Lebanon of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterresexpressed this Friday that “fully supports” the proposal for a 21-day ceasefire presented by the United States and France.

“We need a ceasefire now,” he asked. Guterres during a meeting of the UN Security Council and added that “We cannot afford endless negotiations, like the ones we have over Gaza”. For these reasons he stated: “I fully support the temporary ceasefire proposal.”

The request for Guterres occurs after several similar speeches given by world leaders at the 79th UN General Assembly that is taking place these days in New York. Some of them were those of the presidents of France, Emmanuel Macronor that of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. Both referred to Israeli operations in Lebanon and called for a cessation of hostilities.
