He can’t help it: Argentine national goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was noticed with an obscene gesture after the World Cup final in Qatar. Now he’s done it again.
The Argentine soccer world champion Emiliano Martínez has been banned for two games in the South American World Cup qualification for, among other things, another obscene gesture. The ban issued by the disciplinary committee of the world association Fifa was announced by the Argentine football association AFA. The goalkeeper will therefore be missing from Argentina’s games against Venezuela and Bolivia in October.
Emiliano Martínez: punching a cameraman
Martínez was punished for his misconduct after his team’s games against Chile and Colombia this month. After the game against Chile (3-0), the 32-year-old held the Copa America trophy, which Argentina won in mid-July, provocatively in front of his abdomen. The Aston Villa professional had already attracted negative attention with a similarly obscene jubilant gesture at the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar when he held the Golden Glove as an award for the best goalkeeper in the tournament in front of his genitals at the ceremony.
Martínez is also said to have attacked a cameraman after Argentina’s 1-2 defeat against Colombia. The Argentine Football Association said it “strongly disagrees” with FIFA’s decision.
