After Furrer’s death: Cycling World Cup sports director: rescue chain worked “very well”

After the death of the Swiss Muriel Furrer, the sports director of the World Cycling Championships gives the first insight into the rescue operation. However, he leaves one question unanswered.

The sporting director of the Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich, Olivier Senn, gave the first insight into the rescue operation for Muriel Furrer, who later died. The rescue chain worked “very well,” Senn told the Swiss news agency sda.

“Within minutes of receiving the accident report, the doctor and ambulance were on site and began providing first aid. The rescue helicopter was also ready,” said the 54-year-old. However, Senn left it open exactly when the accident report was received. The 18-year-old cyclist, who died on Friday a day after her fall, was probably undiscovered at the scene of the accident for a long time.

Just one fall on the descent

Senn confirmed that the fall occurred on the descent in the forest outside Küsnacht. “I don’t know how the accident happened or the exact location of the accident. We know where Muriel was found, but we don’t know exactly what the accident site looks like,” said Senn, who is also director of the Tour de Suisse. The police and public prosecutor’s office are still in the process of clarifying what happened to the accident.

There were never any concerns about the descent in the forest when planning the route. “So far there have been around 1,500 runs at this World Cup and, as far as I know, only one crash. Unfortunately, a very tragic one,” said Senn. “The World Cup route has been analyzed many times in terms of risks. They do not involve any risks above the usual level.”

Memorial drive on Sunday

When it comes to securing the route, the world association’s regulations are adhered to. The UCI approved the route. “We never had any negative feedback about this passage,” Senn said. Neither from the UCI nor from the teams.

There will be a memorial ride in Furrer’s honor on Sunday. This was decided after consultation with the UCI, the Swiss federation and Furrer’s family. The trip starts at 7:15 a.m. in the start-finish area of the World Cup. In addition, a central place of mourning was set up at the Wasserkirche Zurich.
