With a doublet of Lionel Messihe Inter Miami beat the Columbus Crew 3-2 this Wednesday and secured first place in the regular season of the MLSwhich is recognized with the Supporters’ Shield trophy.
The world champion opened the scoring in Columbus, Ohio in the 45th minute and increased the lead with a spectacular free kick goal in the 50th minute of the first act.
Luis Suárez also scored for Inter Miami (48) while Uruguayan Diego Rossi (46) and Colombian Juan Camilo ‘Cucho’ Hernández (61) did it for the locals.
Hernández himself had the chance to tie a penalty that was saved by goalkeeper Drake Callender in the 84th minute.
With two days left to play, Gerardo Martino’s team has 68 points and can no longer be caught by their main pursuers, the Los Angeles Galaxy (59) and Columbus Crew (57).
The Supporters’ Shield trophy, which Inter Miami had never won, is the second that Messi has lifted since his arrival in Miami after the 2023 Leagues Cup.
