A scrap metal dealer named Luigi Lo Rosso made a surprising discovery in 1962 in the Capri island: a rolled up box that turned out to be a original work of Pablo Picassovalued at more than US$6,000,000.

Although he initially thought nothing of it, he gave it to his wife, who hung it in their home, where it remained for decades.

It was not until the 1980s that his son, Andrearecognized the painting in an art history book as “Buste de femme Dora Maar”, a portrait of the photographer Dora Maar. After investigating its authenticity, the family faced several denials from experts.

Given such a discovery, Andrea Lo Rosso remains optimistic while working to validate the work before experts in Paris.

“From Dad’s stories I know that two canvases were recovered from the Capri landfill, but only one was signed by Picasso.. Both were covered with dirt and lime and my mother spread them out and washed them with detergent, like they were carpets.”, he recalled in dialogue with CNN.
