The Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of microRNAa new type of RNA molecule crucial in regulating gene activity.

“It is being shown to be of fundamental importance in how organisms develop and function,” said the jury’s statement, published this Monday.

In 1993, Ambros and Ruvkun published their unexpected discovery of a new level of genetic regulation that was of enormous importance.

Ambros, 71, developed his research while he was a professor at Harvard University. He now teaches at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
