He is the Bundesliga player of the moment: Omar Marmoush. Eight goals, four assists in six games – the Eintracht Frankfurt attacker is having a breathtaking season so far.
For Dayot Upamecano, the workday early Sunday evening had its ups and downs. The Bayern defender at least scored a winning goal in the 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, which doesn’t happen very often. But in the end it wasn’t what will be remembered.
What was more significant was his lost running duel against Eintracht attacker Omar Marmoush in the first half. The Egyptian attacker simply shrugged off the defender as he ran forward, making Upamecano look like an overwhelmed rookie. Marmoush was too fast and too stable, drove the ball forward and passed it to his congenial strike partner Hugo Etiketé, who scored the 2-1 lead for Eintracht.
What may console Upamecano a little: Marmoush basically demonstrated all of the Bayern professionals almost alone on Sunday evening. The 25-year-old prepared one goal and scored the other two himself. When he scored to make it 1-1, he made Rafael Guerreiro look old and before his equalizer in extra time, the three of Palhinha, Dier and Kim tried to catch him – in vain. Marmoush was elusive.
Omar Marmoush has “special qualities”
The man is the player of the hour in the Bundesliga. In six games he scored eight goals and four assists, which is an outstanding rate. Only Harry Kane can keep up. The Bayern striker also accumulated twelve scorer points, but seven of them were goal preparations. The football trade magazine “Kicker” chose Marmoush as player of the match day and wrote impressedly: “He came over FC Bayern on Sunday evening like a tornado, causing merciless devastation.”
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised him despite his anger over the wasted victory: “He also has speed and then the quality in his finishing. I can recognize that when players have special qualities. We have a lot of players like that at Bayern and he is one of them too .”
Marmoush already scored 17 goals this season. But now he seems to have really arrived and can fully exploit his qualities. What helps him: Coach Dino Topmöller’s team seems more solid overall, Frankfurt is currently in third place in the table. Marmoush has a strike partner in Etiketé who has similar qualities.
Talent continuously developed
Another strength of the Egyptian is that he has continuously developed his talent and slowly matured under the radar. At 17, VfL Wolfsburg signed him from Cairo club Wadi Degla, where he initially played in the second team. The Egyptian made his first mark at FC St. Pauli. Hamburg loaned him out for six months when they were in danger of collapsing in the 2nd Bundesliga. Marmoush was a crucial factor in getting things going again.
From Wolfsburg we went via VfB Stuttgart to Eintracht in Frankfurt. Marmoush’s strength flashed everywhere without him being able to break through. He gradually got better and better – until his form skyrocketed in the current season.
Apparently the 25-year-old knows what’s good for him. One of the secrets to success is probably the feel-good factor. “It’s a lot of fun. We’re like a family. We all celebrate together as a team, even those who didn’t play,” said Marmoush after the Bayern game. Last summer, wealthy Premier League clubs wanted to sign the attacker, but Marmoush refused. His instincts have proven to be right and Eintracht can be happy that they have one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga under contract until 2027. In the end it should be worth it for both sides.
