University financing: pressure increases from the northern provinces to reject the veto

Representatives from different areas of political and educational life in northern Argentina expressed themselves against the presidential veto of the University Financing Law, which will be discussed this Wednesday the 9th in session in the Chamber of Deputies. Among them are the Council of Deans of all the Faculties of the National University of Tucumán (UNT), which published an open letter addressed to the national deputies of its province; the Chamber of Senators of Saltathe Jujuy Legislature and the Committee of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) of Catamarca.

In the case of UNT, the body that brings together the deans and is coordinated by the vice-rector Mercedes Lealin line with what was already requested by the rector Sergio Pagani and the Superior Council, released an open letter addressed to the nine national deputies of Tucumán, in which they ask them to “given the veto of the President of the Nation (Decree 879/2024) to the Financing Law of National Universities, we publicly request your vote so that, within the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation, this Law is ratified”.

“Our UNT contributes to regional and national development, promotes social inclusion and enhances access to knowledge throughout society (…) We understand that defending public higher education is not only an act of high political responsibility, but also of social justice and vision of the future for our country”, holds the document.

The letter bears the signatures of the deans Virginia Abdala (Natural sciences) Mateo Martínez (Medicine), Maria Ines Gomez (Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy), María Luisa de la Casa (Dentistry), Juan Ramazzotti (Architecture and Urban Planning), Miguel Cabrera (Exact Sciences and Technology), Susana Monserrat (Agronomy, Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine), Cristina Grunauer (Law and Social Sciences), Jorge Rospide (Economic Sciences), Raul Lischinsky (Physical education), Silvia Lopez (Psychology), Silvia Aguero (Arts) and Sergio Robin (Philosophy and Letters).

Tucumán’s votes will be key in this Wednesday’s session because of the nine, three make up the Independence Bloc (Agustín Fernández, Gladys Medina and Elia Fernández de Mansilla) that split from Unión por la Patria (UP) and acts in coordination with the governor Osvaldo Jaldo. Although the national ruling party counts them as their own, the parliamentarians called for silence and the Tucumán provincial chief also failed to anticipate their behavior in the session.

From Jujuythe Legislature unanimously approved a resolution that rejects the veto of the University Financing Law approved in September by Congress. The radical Ramón Brajcich stated in the session: “What is happening in the country challenges us from a perspective of understanding that we have a president who came with the slogan of destroying the State. We have to get out of our extreme ideologies and find ourselves at a point because the future of the country depends on it” .

“The Federal University March should lead us to reflect on the path we are traveling and the impact it will have on the people of Jujuy. Many national legislators support these policies that harm Jujuy residents. “We are going to sign what needs to be signed when it means putting on the table the rights that correspond to us as citizens, as Jujeños, as Argentines.”complemented his Peronist counterpart Carlos Haquim.

In the case of Jumpthe provincial Chamber of Senators unanimously approved a resolution that urges national deputies and senators of that province to “reject the veto of the university financing law and thus guarantee the present and future of Argentines.”

“Defend our university and the possibility of the future of our young people and if you do not do so, the people will surely demand it from you. Do not abandon us, this is the fight of all the Argentine people,” insisted on the session Alejandra Navarrorepresentative of the Anta department.

“Some have already made a mistake with the retirees, some have already betrayed the retirees, do not betray the Argentine people, do not betray your mandate, do not betray public education, do not betray the Argentine national university and the people of Salta, do not betray the UNSa “, added the parliamentarian Walter Wayarauthor of the project.

From Catamarca

The UCR of Catamarca issued a statement in the last few hours in which it asks “the national legislators belonging to our political force, in particular, and those of Catamarca and the country in general, to attend the session and reject the veto that the President intends to exercise.”

The requirement is not accidental, since the opposition needs two-thirds of the deputies present to win the vote. Thus, the weight of the absences and abstentions could be functional to the ruling party that intends to uphold the veto.

“For the radicals, attending the session and rejecting the veto is not only complying with the will of radicalism expressed through the document approved by the national table on September 25; it is also a moral debt that represents those who do not want a Argentina divided and impoverished by libertarian policies,” says the statement signed by the Provincial Committee chaired by the provincial deputy Alfredo Marchioli.
