The Edmonton Oilers want to get back to the Stanley Cup final. At the start of the season, Leon Draisaitl’s team received a slap – not for the first time.
Leon Draisaitl and the Edmonton Oilers started the NHL season with a bitter defeat. Last season’s Stanley Cup finalists lost 6-0 to the Winnipeg Jets at the start in front of their own crowd. Adam Lory opened the flood of goals in the 15th minute, and after two thirds of the game the guests were ahead with five goals. Mark Scheifele scored the final goal in the final third.
Draisaitl, who recently signed a record contract in the NHL and will become the highest-paid professional in the league with an average annual salary of $14 million, did not find any means with his teammates and ended the game with only three shots on goal. The Oilers also started last season with a significant defeat. A year ago there was an 8-1 defeat against the Vancouver Canucks. The Oilers even lost ten of the first twelve games – but in the end the team around Draisaitl and Connor McDavid still made it into the playoffs and into the final series for the championship.
