Those accused of the crime of the Independiente fan refused to testify

The defendants were arrested yesterday in two raids carried out by the Buenos Aires police as part of the investigation into the crime of the Independiente fan. Prosecutor Laborde, in charge of the file, ordered the proceedings at the private homes of both subjects, who were identified by a home video taken by the police.

In that recording, the two detainees appear at the scene of the incidents aboard a motorcycle, one of them carrying a weapon, a judicial spokesman informed Télam. Juan Calvente, 35, died during a fight between Independiente fans, who were traveling to La Plata to watch the match, and residents of the Rancho Grande neighborhood in Wilde, who kept traffic on the highway closed as a protest measure against the lack of electricity supply.

In addition, Mario Ricardo Almada (29) and Carlos Ruiz Díaz (32) were injured but are “stable and out of danger,” sources from the investigation confirmed to this agency. On the other hand, UFI No. 4, of the prosecutor Mario Prieto, specialized in institutional violence, opened a second case for abuse of weapons against the police and to rule out that the fatal shot came from a regulation pistol of the security personnel.

The investigators await the results of the autopsy to know the caliber of the projectile that killed Calvente, one of the “Rojo” fans who was heading towards the UNO Stadium of La Plata Students. Ten buses with fans of “Rojo” were escorted on Saturday afternoon by the police on the highway when they had to interrupt their march at kilometer 14 due to a picket line throughout the route carried out by the residents of Rancho Grande due to the lack of light in the area.

Unable to continue on their way, the fans got off the buses to clear the demonstration and a major confrontation ensued, which spread to the sides and over the highway bridge. During the incidents and in circumstances that are still undetermined, Calvente was wounded in the chest by a gunshot and was transferred to the Bernal Sanatorium, where he later died.

Almada and Ruiz Díaz were also referred to the clinic with pellet wounds, all due to attacks from the Rancho Grande group, according to the police report. A while before the confrontation, the squad and the fans of San Lorenzo and also the mobile in which the referees of the match were heading had managed to avoid the picket without problems, which began around 6:00 p.m. with a freed highway lane. After the brawl on the highway, a group of individuals carried out damage in that complex of the Avellaneda entity that is close to the Rancho Grande neighborhood, in Wilde.
