National football team: DFB has significantly more organized fans

The atmosphere at international matches has been discussed emotionally for years. The national players were thrilled at the European Championships. It will also be loud in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The German national soccer team will be supported by at least 650 fans at the Nations League game in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The request exceeded the number of tickets provided by the home association, the German Football Association said at the request of the German Press Agency. A good 13,000 fans are expected at the Bilino Polje stadium in Zenica today (8:45 p.m./RTL), most of whom will support the underdogs Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The DFB changed its fan management a year ago and also made it possible for independent fan clubs to register and advertise for tickets. In the past few months, 200 independent national team fan clubs with around 5,000 members have been founded or registered, the DFB said. The official “National Team Fan Club” currently has around 64,500 members, and 4,500 new members have been added since the DFB team was eliminated from the 2024 home European Championship.

“The fact that so many independent fan clubs have been founded in such a short time is a bit crazy and we are very pleased,” said captain Joshua Kimmich to the dpa. The European Championship in the summer was “an absolute highlight”, but the support was already noticeable in March. “And it felt very good again in September at the start of the Nations League,” said Kimmich. “We have to keep at it and do everything we can to consolidate and confirm this.”

DFB relies on bonus system

If the demand for tickets exceeds the supply, the DFB distributes the tickets according to a bonus system in which previous visits to international matches count. It remains to be seen whether and how many German fans made the trip in addition to the supporters with tickets from the official contingent.

The fan culture at national team games differs from that at club level and a comparison is difficult. Interest in the DFB selection had declined after years of failure. In the past (European Championship) months, there have been mostly positive reports about the DFB fans.

“The fan clubs’ commitment to a positive, supportive fan culture among the national teams gave rise to various working groups that, among other things, are actively involved in the issue of atmosphere in the stadium,” said the DFB. “As a result, we are registering an increase in self-designed fence flags, self-produced fan scarves, the use of fan paraphernalia such as drums and flags and, last but not least, fan-organized “cantors” at national team games.”
