Professional bodybuilders train for the Mr. Olympia all year round. Last year the competition took place in Orlando, Florida and is back in Las Vegas, Nevada this year for its 60th anniversary.
On Friday and Saturday, October 11th to 12th, 2024, the best men and women in the sport will compete in various categories. A press conference with the athletes took place on Thursday.
Where does Mr. Olympia come from?
The bodybuilding legend Joe Weider (†93) launched the competition in 1965. Since then, the Mr. Olympia has been considered the most prestigious competition in sport. Probably the most famous bodybuilder who took part is Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Austrian, who is now 77 years old, has won the title seven times.

What does the process look like?
The competition days begin with the so-called “pre-judging” for the individual categories. The judges get a first impression and make a pre-selection. The finals follow later in the day, usually with the ten best in each class. In order to convince the “judges”, the bodybuilders perform an individual routine. Not only the muscular development of the body is assessed, but also the presentation and “posing”.
Who are the participants and favorites?
From a German perspective, the “Classic Physique” is the most exciting category this weekend. With Urs Kalecinski (26), Mike Sommerfeld (30) and newcomer Luca Reger (22), three athletes are taking part in the race for Germany. Urs Kalecinski has the most chances out of them. The Swabian native took third place at the Mr. Olympia in each of the last two years.
Kalecinski has so far been unable to get past five-time champion Christopher Bumstead and Ramon Queiroz. In addition, the Dutchman Wesley Vissers should also be at the top this year. At the beginning of the year he won the second most important competition in bodybuilding, the “Arnold Classics”.
