Defending champion Bayern Munich needs a good quarter to reach the cup quarter-finals. Co-favorite Alba Berlin is trembling with a second division team until the last second.
The basketball players from FC Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the German Cup. In the 91:85 (41:46) at Telekom Baskets Bonn, former national coach Gordon Herbert’s team had some problems with the Rhinelanders for two quarters, but won the match thanks to a convincing third round (29:15).
The Munich team only got into the game after the break thanks to a furious Carsen Edwards. After a 73:61 lead (31st minute), everything looked like a confident Munich success. In the final phase the hosts came close again (85:87/39th), but were unable to turn the match around again. Bayern’s top scorer Edwards scored all of his 23 points in the third and fourth quarters.
Alba trembles for a long time
Alba Berlin reached the quarter-finals with a lot of confusion. The eleven-time cup winner won with a lot of enthusiasm 75:74 (28:43) despite a weak performance for a long time against second division team Hakro Merlins Crailsheim. In the third quarter, coach Israel Gonzalez’s team was down 41:58, but fought its way back into the game.
5.9 seconds before the end, Martin Hermannsson gave Berlin the lead for the first time (75:74). Alba was lucky that Tyrese Blunt missed three free throws one second before the end.
Heidelberg and the MBC surprise
The MLP Academics Heidelberg and the Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels each surprisingly reached the quarter-finals. Thanks to 29 points from Ryan Mikesell, Heidelberg won against the Niners Chemnitz with 78:73 (42:35). The MBC won after a 17-point deficit at the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg with 85:77 (39:43).
The Frankfurt Skyliners (85:79 against Oldenburg), Rasta Vechta (89:68 in Braunschweig), the Bamberg Baskets (103:100 against ratiopharm Ulm) and the BG Göttingen (86:78 against Würzburg) previously made it into the round the best eight.
