Causa Djokovic: Australia’s tennis association wants to examine its approach

There are always lessons to be learned, Tennis Australia said on Tuesday. As every year, they want to check all aspects. At the same time, the association apologized for the vortex that had arisen before the start of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

“We understand that recent events have been a major distraction for everyone,” Tennis Australia said, without mentioning Djokovic’s name in the statement. The Serbian world number one had traveled to Australia unvaccinated because he wanted to take part in the Australian Open with a medical exemption. However, when he entered the country, his visa was canceled because the 34-year-old could not provide sufficient documentation for the special permit.

After a court battle that lasted for days, the federal court in Melbourne declared the visa withdrawal to be legal on Sunday, one day before the start of the Australian Open. Djokovic then had to leave Australia. Tennis Australia has worked closely with the Australian and Victorian state governments, the statement said.
