Thomas Tuchel has been without a job since the summer. That could change quickly. According to a media report, he is in “pole position” with the English association. Another coaching star appears to be out of the running.
According to a media report, Thomas Tuchel is said to be the most promising candidate for the coaching job of the English national team. Sky Sports News reports that the English Football Association FA is currently in talks with Tuchel’s representatives and has placed the 51-year-old in “pole position” in the search. Accordingly, Tuchel is now the first choice, but many details of the contract still need to be negotiated.
According to Sky, the association bosses assume that they will not have to pay any compensation to FC Bayern Munich for Tuchel. The German record champions separated from the coach at the end of the previous season, and the contract that originally ran until 2025 ended prematurely last summer.
The association is looking for a new head coach for the Three Lions following Gareth Southgate’s resignation following the European Championship final defeat against Spain. Lee Carsley is currently looking after the team around captain Harry Kane from FC Bayern on an interim basis. “This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and been through it all,” Carsley said recently.
A Tuchel competitor appears to be out of the race
This is also why Tuchel fits the profile. He won national championship titles with Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup with Chelsea. The coach therefore enjoys a good reputation in England. Tuchel is currently being considered as a possible successor to the controversial Erik ten Hag at Premier League club Manchester United.
Should Tuchel take over the national coaching job, he would be only the third foreigner to be entrusted with this task. The Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001 to 2006), who has since died, and the Italian Fabio Capello (2007 to 2012) had previously trained the Three Lions.
Pep Guardiola, however, appears to be out of the running, as Sky Sports News further reported. Despite an informal request in July, there was no further development regarding this personnel. According to information from The Times, the Manchester City coach is expected to make a decision about his personal future in the coming weeks.
