Quite a few English people wanted an English national coach. Thomas Tuchel tries to convince the critics with his performance.
When he was introduced as England’s new national football coach, Thomas Tuchel responded with humor to critics who would have preferred to see an English coach at the Three Lions. “I’m sorry, I only have a German passport,” said the 51-year-old with a smile. Then Tuchel added: “Hopefully I can convince them and show them and prove that I’m proud to be the England coach and that I’m giving everything for this job. (…) Everyone can be sure of that, no matter what nationality I am have.”
Tuchel is the first German to hold the most important coaching position in England. Before him, only two other foreigners had coached the Three Lions: the recently deceased Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson (January 2001 to July 2006) and the Italian Fabio Capello (December 2007 to February 2012).
Tuchel wants the World Cup title
During his introduction at Wembley Stadium, Tuchel made it clear that the 2026 World Cup title was the main goal of his contractually limited time with the English FA, which was initially limited to 18 months. He will do everything “to make our dream come true in America.”
The former Bayern coach should lead the Three Lions to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada and end the long wait for the first major title since the 1966 World Cup triumph. Tuchel will start working as coach of the team led by captain Harry Kane from FC Bayern from January 1, 2025.
