The hundreds of defendants are wanted by the Brazilian Justice after carrying out the attack on the headquarters of the Government and the Rio Congress, during the inauguration of Lula Da Silva, on January 8, 2023.

The extradition request of the Brazilian Justice

The request was initially made by the Brazilian Federal Police before the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil. After this, De Moraes sent the document to the Ministry of Justice who, subsequently and through the corresponding mechanisms, sent the request to the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

Extradition is a legal figure that is presented to a country, through diplomatic channels, to request that one or more people be handed over deprived of their liberty with the aim of being subjected to criminal proceedings – or serving a sentence already imposed – in the State of origin of the request. Now, Argentina must respond to the request of its Latin American counterpart and it is expected that the Government to make its position known through the press conference of the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, next Friday.

In detail, the Brazilian press assures that the requests cover a total of 63 people living in Argentine territory.

The extradition requests arise within the framework of the investigations carried out by the Brazilian Justice for the assault on the Plaza of the Three Powers, Brasilia, fact that the Brazilian government classified as a “coup attempt” against President Lula Da Silva. In this event, hundreds of supporters of the far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro invaded the headquarters of the Presidency, Congress and the STF against the inauguration of the new president.

After the riot, the police identified dozens of those involved, some of whom were sentenced to sentences of up to 17 years in prison for crimes such as attempted coup d’étatarmed criminal association and damage to historical buildings and monuments. However, investigators discovered months later that many of them had escaped to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, according to the Brazilian press.

The fugitives in Argentina

Last June, Argentine authorities confirmed that more than sixty fugitives were in their territory. Several of those investigated initiated a process to request political asylum, the resolution of which is pending.

Along these lines, previously – last Thursday, May 30 -, Eduardo Bolsonaro participated in an event organized by Freedom Advances (LLA) in the National Congress, where he confirmed and requested political asylum for Brazilians accused of attempting a coup against the inauguration of Lula Da Silva. In his speech, the son of the former Brazilian president denounced “censorship” and “persecution” in their country..

The event where Eduardo Bolsonaro participated was called “Censorship, freedom of expression and human rights in Brazil.” The coordination was in charge of the LLA deputy, Maria Celeste Ponce and it took place in the hall of the Lost Steps.

At the meeting, in which around a hundred people participated, the libertarian representative Ponce called for the unity of the regional right against the left. “The new right of Brazil and Argentina is gathered here to energetically repudiate the political persecution suffered by Brazilian citizens, but also to remind the left that we are willing to defend Western values and be the beacon of the West in the world,” stated Ponce.
