Philippa Boyens, screenwriter of the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson confirmed the news.
Good news came from Middle Earth earlier this year: more Middle-earth movies. The Lord of the Rings are on their way with Warner Bros, with Peter Jackson and his team as producers, and familiar faces are also expected to return in front of the camera. Then quickly came the revelation that one of those upcoming projects is titled The Hunt for Gollumset shortly before the main events of The Fellowship of the Ringand which will be directed by Andy Serkis.

From there, all sorts of rumors and reports have spread, including the idea that The Hunt for Gollum will be split into two films, something that originated from an interview with the Gandalf actor, Sir Ian McKellen. But, as the screenwriter of The Lord of the Rings explains to the Empire portal, Philippa Boyensthere was a confusion.

“I can definitely tell you that they are not two movies”says. “It was a genuine misunderstanding that occurred because we started working, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first is The Hunt for Gollum and the second is yet to be confirmedEven in just one film, Boyens promises a gripping story that will be told in Serkis’ feature film. “It’s a pretty intense story, taking place after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria,” he explains. “It’s a specific fragment of an incredible untold story, told from the perspective of this incredible creature.”
Ian McKellen will be part of both Lord of the Rings projects
As for why McKellen might have thought The Hunt for Gollum would be a two-part movie, there’s a good reason for that. “We’re playing with various ideas, but most of those ideas involve Gandalf,” explains Boyens. “So Gandalf could potentially return for two live-action movies.”.
Also, if the anime movie The Rohirrim Warin which Boyens is a writer and producer, turns out to be a hit this December, there could also be more animated Middle-earth stories. “We have an absolutely spectacular second movie that would be incredible as an anime,” he anticipates. “But let’s see if there’s an appetite for it.” Who is ready to go there and come back again?
