New Zealand’s sailors remain the benchmark in the America’s Cup. Before Barcelona, Emirates Team New Zealand prevailed in the 37th match for sailing’s oldest and most important trophy. The New Zealanders won 7-2 against their challengers from Great Britain. The defending champion converted the first of five match points and also won the duel for the America’s Cup in race nine.
The “All Blacks of Sailing” were the first team in the 173-year history of the Cup to achieve three Cup victories in a row. Overall, it was the fifth cup triumph after 1995, 2000, 2017 and 2021.

The New Zealand yacht “Taihoro” reached the finish in 37 seconds and 580 meters ahead of “Britannia”. Peter Burling said: “It was an incredible fight. I’m very proud of the whole team.”
“We congratulate the better team. For me they are the best America’s Cup team of all time,” said defeated Sir Ben Ainslie. The British challengers have to console themselves with the fact that they had come further than ever at the third attempt under Ainslie’s leadership and were in a cup match for the first time.

Even at the third attempt under the British flag, Ainslie was unable to realize the dream of returning the America’s Cup to his mother country, where the Cup premiere took place off the Isle of Wight in 1851.
