The plan for development from a panoramic viewpoint from the Obelisk keep moving forward. It has a completion period of eight months and involves engineers, architects, security specialists and technical operators. “We are facing a great engineering project that will revalue one of the symbols of Buenos Aires“, stated this morning the head of the Buenos Aires government Jorge Macri.

Macri also added that “it is going to be a new tourist attraction that will change the way we see our City and its heritage, as in the great metropolises of the world.” He was in the company of the Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, Ignacio Baistrocchi, supervising the work.

How the Obelisk panoramic viewpoint project continues

The works include a area of ​​160 square meters –between the base, the four metal columns that contain the elevator guides, the emergency staircase and the viewing platform. The elevator will reach a height of 55 meters.

Visitors will be able to climb to the viewpoint via a spiral staircase of 35 steps. It will be for four people and will have three glazed sides. Until now you could only climb to the top using seven flights of stairs. with 206 steps in total. The ascent was done with helmet, asbestos gloves, harnesses and the assistance of staff Civil defense.

About the Obelisk of the City of Buenos Aires

The Obelisk was created by the architect Alberto Prebisch and was inaugurated May 23, 1936 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first founding of Buenos Aires. It was raised in the Republic Square, in the record time of 31 days, and 157 workers worked on the project. It measures 67.5 meters high and has a base of 6.8 meters per side.

Its construction was part of a City modernization plan which included the widening of Corrientes Avenue and the opening of 9 de Julio Avenue. As the Obelisk is a National Historical Monumentany installation in it must be reversible to preserve its structure.

As in this case the work does not affect the facades or the top of the monument, it was approved by the National Monuments Commission.
