FC Bayern wins in the top game and RB Leipzig stays on top. In the stands, Mainz fans criticized their former coach Jürgen Klopp. Matchday at a glance.
Football fans of 1. FSV Mainz 05 protested with posters against the commitment of former Mainz coach Jürgen Klopp to the Red Bull Group at their club’s Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig. “You have forgotten everything we made you have?” was written in white letters on a red banner in the Mainz fan curve. Other posters read: “Are you crazy?” and “Klopp: I like people until they disappoint me.”
Klopp played in Mainz for eleven years and then coached the club from 2001 to 2008. In the summer, the 57-year-old quit as manager at Liverpool FC after nine years and announced a break from his coaching job. As of January 1, 2025, he will now take over football strategic tasks at Red Bull as “Head of Global Soccer”. This was heavily criticized by fans in Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, where he was coach from 2008 to 2015.
Saturday afternoon games in the Bundesliga at a glance
On the pitch, Leipzig prevailed and at least temporarily took over the top position in the Bundesliga. With the 2-0 (2-0), coach Marco Rose’s team moved past FC Bayern in the table. Xavi (20th minute) and Willi Orban (37th) scored the final score before the break.
However, FC Bayern Munich regained the lead in the table in the evening game. Thanks to a hat trick from striker Harry Kane, the German record champions won the top game against VfB Stuttgart 4-0 (0-0). The English national team captain secured the preliminary decision in the home game against runner-up Stuttgart with his goals in the 57th, 61st and 80th minutes. Kingsley Coman scored the final point in the 89th minute. Thanks to their success, Bayern remain leaders ahead of Leipzig, who have the same number of points, thanks to a better goal difference.
There were two penalties according to video evidence in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-1 (1-1) home win against Eintracht Frankfurt. While Bayer striker Victor Boniface failed miserably against Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (9th minute), Frankfurt’s top star Omar Marmoush confidently converted on the other side (16th minute). National players Robert Andrich (25th) and Boniface (72nd) turned the game in favor of the German champions.
Mönchengladbach’s coach Gerardo Seoane, who is at least counted on by the public, can breathe a sigh of relief for the first time. With the 3:2 (1:1) against 1. FC Heidenheim, Borussia moved away from the relegation zone with nine points. Ko Itakura (22nd) and new international Tim Kleindienst (62nd, 75th/foul penalty) scored for the Fohlen team. Bottom team VfL Bochum remains winless. Head coach Peter Zeidler’s team suffered their sixth defeat of the season in a 1:3 (0:1) draw at TSG Hoffenheim. Particularly bitter: Lukas Daschner missed a great chance to make it 2-2 with a penalty in the 89th minute when he was denied by Oliver Baumann. Andrej Kramaric (11th) and Marius Bülter (64th) had previously scored for the team of the recently criticized TSG coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, and Christian Gamboa (76th) for VfL. Haris Tabakovic (90th + 3) made everything clear for the home team after Daschner’s mistake.
SC Freiburg consolidated its place in the top group. Vincenzo Grifo (34th), Philipp Lienhart (37th) and Christian Günter (45th + 1) laid the foundation for the 3-1 (3-0) win against FC Augsburg before the break. Phillip Tietz (65th) only managed cosmetic results.
Borussia Dortmund won its home game against newly promoted FC St. Pauli 2-1 (1-0) on Friday evening.
