A magnitude 5.8 earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded this Sunday in the province of Saint Johnwith intense tremors. Despite the movement, no damage was reported. The event was previewed by the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (INPRES), which detailed that the earthquake occurred at 7:59 p.m., at a depth of 112 kilometers, with an epicenter 70 kilometers southeast of the San Juan town of Iglesia.

According to the agency’s reports, the earthquake was recorded 82 kilometers northwest of the city of San Juan, capital of the province, with no reports so far of victims or severe material damage.

The epicenter area is a sparsely populated region of Argentina, located about 1,230 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires.
Cuyo’s newspaper reported that “the movement was perceived in the Chilean regions of Atacama, Coquimbo and Valparaiso”, while “it was also felt in other Argentine provinces, including Córdoba.”

The seismic phenomenon was not only perceived in San Juan, but was also felt in the Chilean regions of Atacama, Coquimbo and Valparaisoas well as in other Argentine provinces such as Mendoza and even Cordova.
The intensity of the earthquake varied between IV and V on the Mercalli scale in areas such as the provincial capital, Albardon, Caucete, Jáchal, Calingasta and Church.
It should be remembered that on September 21, a strong tremor of 6 degrees on the Richter scale was felt in the Cuyo area. The earthquake had its epicenter in San Luis but had repercussions in Mendoza, San Juan and Córdoba.
The phenomenon was also perceived by residents on the other side of the Andes Mountains, in Chile.
