Laurent Schwarza three-year-old German boy, paints canvases often larger than himself in his studio in a corner of his house in Neubeuern, southeastern Germany.

With his brushes, rollers and sometimes simply with his fingers, draw abstract and colorful motifs. A passion he discovered a year ago, when he spent his vacation in a family hotel that had a workshop. “We came home and I just wanted to paint, paint, paint,” his mother Lisa Schwarz, 33, told AFP.

Also They open an Instagram account in which they publish photos and videos of the works. “In four weeks, we reached 10,000 followers”recalls Lisa Schwarz, who says that initially she was only looking to share images of her son’s work with family and friends. Shortly after, however, the first gallery proposals arrived, fueled by the enthusiasm of the media and social networks.

The little boy prodigy now has 90,000 followers. And buyers from all over the world bid up to several hundred thousand euros for his works at a sale in Neubeuern at the end of September. “Among those interested were a famous American actor, royal families (…) It was incredible,” recalls Lisa Schwarz.

Little Picasso in Germany

Although little Schwarz developed his passion for art at a very young age, he is not the first to pick up the brush so quickly. It is not uncommon to see fashion phenomena around children, portrayed in the media as new “little Picassos.”

In 2022, for example, the American Andrés Valencia was selling his works inspired by the Spanish cubism painter for several hundred thousand euros. Before him was the Romanian-American artist Alexandra Nechita, nicknamed “Little Picasso” in the late 1990s. She caught the attention of the artistic community when she was barely 12 years old. But there are other similar cases in the world.

Laurent Schwarz’s parents say they are still surprised by the turn their son’s adventure took. They assure that the money he receives for his works goes to an account in the child’s name, and that he can use it however he wants once he is an adult. “He can study painting, buy a car, play an instrument or play football (…) He will choose,” promises his father Philippe Schwarz, 43. “The important thing for us is that you are happy”says.
