The new national coach of the German footballers is keeping a low profile before his debut in the classic against England. It remains unclear who will be allowed to play from the start – except for two positions.
Before the international match between the German footballers and European champions England, new national coach Christian Wück is keeping the line-up a little secret. Basically, he won’t do it the same way as his predecessor Horst Hrubesch, “the players don’t yet know who will play tomorrow.” That will only be decided after the final training.
There are two exceptions: “Ann-Katrin Berger will start,” said Wück, referring to the number 1 in goal. Also set this Friday (8.30 p.m./ARD) at London’s Wembley Stadium is full-back Giulia Gwinn, who will lead the team as captain.
Who, alongside Berger and Gwinn, will ensure that the German defense leaves Wembley without conceding a goal in front of at least 52,000 fans is the big question after the many failures in defense. Marina Hegering from VfL Wolfsburg has resigned, club colleague Kathrin Hendrich (load control) is sidelined, Bibiane Schulze Solano from Athletic Bilbao will be out for a long time after tearing her cruciate ligament. Wück announced that he wanted to “vary a little bit.”
Defense as the “foundation stone” for success
“Defensive work must be the cornerstone to be successful,” Wück also demanded. Sophia Kleinherne, Sara Doorsoun (both Eintracht Frankfurt) or Janina Minge (VfL Wolfsburg), actually at home in the defensive midfield, are likely candidates for the starting eleven. But everyone could have hopes of starting, said Wück. “We’ll try a bit to let players play in other positions as well.”
Basically, not everything will go according to plan against the Lionesses. “You shouldn’t expect that we can implement everything that we might want to change,” said the former Bundesliga professional, who led his first session with the DFB team on Monday.
