Marcel Hirscher ends the speculation about the timing of his World Cup return. The ski star ventures down the Rettenbachferner at the weekend. There are also eight Germans there.
Ski star Marcel Hirscher wants to make his World Cup comeback at the Alpine season opener in Sölden. The 35-year-old’s ski company confirmed his start in the giant slalom on the Rettenbachferner on Sunday (10 a.m. and 1 p.m./BR and Eurosport). In the past few days there has been speculation about when the former alpine dominator will return – already in Sölden or later this winter. From now on, the eight-time overall World Cup winner will no longer drive for Austria, but for the Netherlands, his mother’s home country.
“I made a decision and said, I’ll do it,” said Hirscher in a video that his ski company “Van Deer” distributed via Instagram and that shows the Salzburg native training. “When perfection becomes passion, magical things happen,” it said.
Hirscher ended his career in 2019 and announced his comeback last spring. It is eagerly awaited to see what form the long-time rival and friend of the German former ski star Felix Neureuther will present himself in. The experts agree that he only drives when he really feels competitive.
Eight Germans at the start in Sölden
The return of the former slalom and giant slalom king, who has won two Olympic and seven World Cup gold medals in addition to 67 World Cup races, is currently only planned for one season. One of Hirscher’s big goals is the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm next February.
The German Ski Association is represented in Sölden this weekend with three male and female athletes – including the slalom aces Lena Dürr and Linus Straßer. However, they are not allowed to compete for the top places. Stefan Luitz is out due to a hand injury. The women’s giant slalom is scheduled for Saturday.
