The UBA awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa to the prestigious economist Dani Rodrik

The event, which was attended by the vice-rector and accountant Emiliano Yacobittiand the teacher Juan Carlos Hallakhad as its main focus Rodrik, who spoke about “Why markets need the State”.

He published several booksamong them: “Has globalization gone too far?”; “Trade Law Talk: Ideas for a Sane Global Economy”; “The Paradox of Globalization: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy” and “Economic Rules: The Rights and Wrongs of Dismal Science.”

Besides, won various awards “Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences”; “The 50 best thinkers in the world from Prospect magazine”; “Albert O. Hirschman Award”, among others.

The state and the markets

In his speech, he stressed that markets do not create, regulate, stabilize or legitimize themselves, but rather must be integrated into a wide range of institutions. He warned that in the equation of productive development, innovation, investment, growth and stability with equity should not be left aside, and that countries must apply pragmatic government policies to stimulate productive diversification.

The professor insisted on the concept that the State should not let the market be the only actor in economic growth, and to this end he gave the Chinese government as an example to achieve economic growth, based on an industrial policy, and also Chile and the exploitation of copper, in which the State intervenes.

Rodrik, who has a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College, has a Master of Public Affairs and a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. He is currently a professor at the John F. Kennedy School Government from Harvard University. In addition, he participated in a panel with Andrés Michel, Secretary of Economic Policies of Córdoba; Norberto Nigro, president of the Litoral Centro Technology Park and María Laura Palacios, Secretary of Polo It, Buenos Aires, CEO of G&L Group SA

The moderator was Juan Carlos Hallak, from the Interdisciplinary Institute of Political Economy of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and in it they exchanged experiences of collaboration between the public and the private.
