Daniela Vilar participated in the environmental Conference of the Parties in Colombia

The Minister of the Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires was the only senior official representing Argentina and held meetings with important leaders from Colombia.

The environment minister of the Province of Buenos Aires, Daniela Vilar, was in Cali, Colombia, participating in the sixteenth edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16), focused on biological biodiversity. This event brings together authorities and specialists from around the world to discuss key environmental policies in a context of growing climate crisis.

Invited by the Government of Colombia, Daniela Vilar was participating in different activities with the objective of, on the one hand, bring the voice of popular Argentine environmentalism closer to international discussion; and on the otheror, make visible the environmental policies that the Province of Buenos Aires is carrying out, learn about the policies implemented in other countries and explore international financing options for the environmental management of the Buenos Aires territory.

The agenda of the Province of Buenos Aires around the COP16 on Biodiversity began with a Pre COP event at the Teatro Argentino in La Plata, which brought together more than 300 scientists, environmentalists, biologists, park rangers, among others, and had the participation of provincial ministers, representatives of the Colombian Embassy in Argentina, non-governmental organizations and national universities.

In Colombia, participated in the opening of COP16 led by President Gustavo Petro and met with the Minister of the Environment of Colombia, Susana Muhamad. “We came to Colombia with the objective of beginning to build a Latin American Environmental Front that firmly marks the position of popular environmentalism in the international arena: the only way for Argentina and the countries of the Global South to defend their natural commons is with a regional alliance that coordinates adaptation, financing and development strategies,” said Vilar.

In addition, he held meetings with officials of the Executive Branch, political leaders, senators and national deputies. “Latin American countries must stand on the global stage with our own vision that reflects our realities and challenges,” said the minister. In the absence of authorities from the National Government, Daniela Vilar, who is in charge of the Ministry of the Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires of the government of Axel Kicillofwas the highest Argentine authority present at the summit so far.

“Faced with the abandonment of Milei’s environmental management, from the Province we came to build bridges of international financing and implementation of public policies that take care of our biodiversity,” he stressed.

In this framework, held work meetings with teams from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, and international organizations such as the CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean). “We are firmly certain that, although all countries have common responsibilities to combat the environmental crisis, these responsibilities are differentiated. That is why we strongly propose the need to guarantee international financing for the ecological transition, more specifically, to build debt exchange mechanisms for climate action,” highlighted the minister, in line with the speech of President Gustavo Petro, who also emphasized the importance of resource mobilization mechanisms from the Global North to the Global South.

Finally, the Lomese minister met with important political leaders such as Vice President Francia Márquez, Senator María José Pizarro, the senator and recent president of the Colombia Humana PartyGloria Florez, and participated in panels and activities with women decision-makers, where she expressed her concern about the political and judicial persecution of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and supported her candidacy for the Justicialista Party.
