The first anime film The Lord of the Rings, The Rohirrim Warwill hit theaters on December 12 and will be set before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit originals. Saruman will appear in the film using archival recordings of Lee’s line readings.
Philippa Boyenscollaborator of Peter Jackson long-time co-writer of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, spoke to TheOneRign.net at New York Comic-Con about the way they used recordings of Lee from when he was alive, without any assistance from artificial intelligence. Lee died in 2015 at the age of 93.
“We entered their [grabaciones]I was able to go back and hear his voice, not just performing his lines, but talking to us while we were recording it,” Boyens said.
“We base [su interpretación en La guerra de Rohirrim] in a line from The Hobbit that says ‘Do you need help, my lady?’, a version of that line. We can see how many takes he made of it, if we can use it, if we can find a new reading and change it a little… but is an authentic fragment of Christopher Lee’s performance”.
The team asked Lee’s widow, Gitte, who has since passed away, for permission to include his old recordings. For a while, it wasn’t clear if it would be possible to find a line from The Hobbit that would work for the anime, so they looked for a similar sound.
“Now I know the Internet will say there are a million people who could have done Chris Lee’s voice, but you know what? I don’t think so. I’m so glad we used your own voice.“Boyens said.
