Argentine judges promote the use of Artificial Intelligence for more efficient justice

A team of jurists participated in SAIAConf 2024 and analyzed the possibilities of new technologies in Justice.

On a panel of the SAIAConf 2024, magistrates and officials of the Judiciary revealed the progress in the implementation of Artificial intelligence in different jurisdictions, from the automation of citizenship procedures to the processing of videos of oral hearings. They agreed that technology, enhances judicial management and allows more time to be spent on resolve conflicts.

Within the framework of the SAIAConf 2024, the most important artificial intelligence event in Argentina, Four prominent representatives of the Judiciary shared their experiences and vision on the implementation of AI in the administration of justice. “Far from being dehumanized by the introduction of technology, Artificial intelligence can be an invaluable ally to achieve faster justice, more transparent, more efficient and ultimately a more humane justice, closer to the citizens,” he summarized David Mielnik, AI Leader of the Nation’s Tax Court and Director of Legal Intelligencewho served as moderator for the panel.

The first to speak was Gonzalo Auguste, Federal Civil and Commercial Judgewho highlighted the project to automate the Citizenship Letter process, financed by the IDB. “We receive between 11 and 15 citizenship procedures per day, per court. It is a procedure that requires the work of many people, for something that can be automatedand we are doing it,” explained Auguste, pointing out that the digital transformation in the Judiciary was accelerated by the pandemic, going from paper files to digitalization in a matter of days.

He then spoke Fernando Strasser, Subrogating Member of the Federal Chamber of Social Security, who shared advances in the automation of processes in a jurisdiction: “We have implemented robots that process in 14 seconds what used to take hours“. “When we reached the positions of judges, they taught us in law school to solve law, but we are forgetting that the judge has two obligations: manage and resolve according to law“said Strasser

The president of the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation, Mariano Borinskyaddressed the application of AI in the criminal field, first highlighting its usefulness in the automated systematization of the factual background of each case, which allows judges to concentrate on the tasks of greatest value: the analysis of the case and the application of the law. “Criminal law is a social science that needs the human judgment of the magistrate, but the “Technological aspects speed up the process and allow you to focus on the most critical aspects”he emphasized.

In turn, Jimena de la Torre, Counselor of the Judiciary representing the lawyers, announced the creation of an innovation committee with three main objectives: develop more accurate judicial statistics using AI; implement an exclusive chatbot for the Judiciary (called “ChatPJN”) and adequate to the security standards required for sensitive data handled in the courts; and process videos of oral hearings using AI to speed up the search for relevant information.
