Storm stops Formula 1: qualification canceled

Racing is out of the question. Rain floods the track in São Paulo. The knockout cannot take place. It is also expected to rain on Sunday.

The Formula 1 qualifying in São Paulo has been canceled due to heavy and persistent rain. The knockout was postponed several times, and at 4:45 p.m. local time – 8:45 p.m. CET the race management decided that it could no longer take place on Saturday. The start was planned for 3 p.m. local time. The plan is now to drive on Sunday morning, confirmed Formula 1 managing director Stefano Domenicali.

The storm had started less than an hour earlier with lightning and thunder. The weather forecast for race day doesn’t bode well either, the Brazilian Grand Prix is scheduled for 6 p.m. CET/Sky.

The sprint race on Saturday, a few hours before the planned qualification, took place without any problems and was still dry; World Championship pursuer Lando Norris won ahead of his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. After a subsequent five-second penalty, Max Verstappen took fourth place in the Red Bull, behind Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. He lost three points in the ranking and now leads Norris with 44.
