Ortega in the DFB squad for the first time – Nagelsmann brings back two BVB stars

The next Nations League games are coming up for the DFB team. National coach Julian Nagelsmann nominates goalkeeper Stefan Ortega for the first time. Two Dortmund players are also returning.

Julian Nagelsmann surprisingly brings Dortmund’s Julian Brandt and Felix Nmecha back into the national football team for the last two international matches of the year. The BVB duo is part of the DFB squad for the first time in exactly a year, in which Manchester City’s reserve goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno is the only newcomer. The national coach can also plan again with Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Benjamin Henrichs and Robin Koch, who missed the October games in Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-1) and against the Netherlands (1-0) due to injuries.

Thanks to the two victories, the national team had already made it into the quarter-finals of the Nations League. With another success against Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 16th (8.45 p.m./RTL) or on November 19th (8.45 p.m./ZDF) in Budapest against Hungary, Germany can complete their group victory.

“After reaching the quarter-finals early, we want to win the group in the Nations League – if possible in front of our fans in the home game in Freiburg. Reaching the Final Four for the first time is an important interim goal for us next year on the way to the 2026 World Cup. We have a strong squad together, even if we have to make changes in some positions due to injuries,” said Nagelsmann.

At the limit: How professional footballers suffer under the high stress

Heidenheimer Juwel rejects DFB for the time being

Aleksandar Pavlovic is not there after his broken collarbone, as are the injured Niclas Füllkrug, David Raum, Jamie Leweling and regular goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The FC Barcelona goalkeeper will again be represented by Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. This time, 32-year-old Ortega Moreno is scheduled to be number three instead of Janis Blaswich.

Dortmund’s Waldemar Anton, who was recently injured, was not nominated. Leroy Sané from FC Bayern did not receive an invitation either, as Nagelsmann said he needed “more match practice and rhythm after his break”. The 18-year-old Paul Wanner, whom Nagelsmann would have liked to have nominated, remains with the DFB U21 for the time being. The Heidenheimer has not yet decided whether he wants to play for Germany or Austria’s senior national team, for which he is eligible to play.
