Nations League: Who is in the quarter-finals and who is relegated

Everything clear in the Nations League? Not at all. Things will be particularly exciting on matchday 5. Because some top nations are still fighting to reach the quarter-finals – others are worried about relegation.

For national coach Julian Nagelsmann and his team there is not much at stake in the Nations League on the last matchday of the group phase. We have already made it to the quarter-finals after the success against the Netherlands (1-0). Now the group victory is still on the cards in the final preliminary round games against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday (8.45 p.m./RTL) and on November 19th (8.45 p.m./ZDF) against Hungary.

However, it is not yet clear who the DFB team could face in the quarter-finals.

Who is in the quarterfinals?

In the new Nations League mode, the first and second-place teams in the A groups advance to the quarter-finals. The four winners in League A meet a runner-up and have home advantage in the second leg. So far, only Germany and European champions Spain can look forward to a secure place.

Top nations such as the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Croatia and runner-up France have to worry about progress – even if purely mathematically. The French can at least be cautiously optimistic after three wins and one defeat in the group with Italy, Belgium and Israel. On Thursday the team needs a win against bottom group Israel (8:45 p.m.). If the clear favorites lose, Belgium will not be allowed to win against Italy on Thursday.

And who has to worry about relegation?

Which nations will play in League B in the future is still completely open. Because currently no team in the A-League has been relegated – even if it is particularly difficult for some. For example, for Bosnia-Herzegovina: if the team loses against Germany, they are relegated. And Switzerland also has to win the home game against Serbia in their group on Friday (8.45 p.m.) in order to stay in the league.

However, some big nations are hoping for promotion from the B league, especially England and Austria and also Norway with top star Erling Haaland. But England still has work to do: Greece has won all games in Group B2 so far, and there will be a direct duel on Thursday. The group winner can move straight into the A league, the second place team has to go into the playoffs against a third place team from League A.

Where can you watch the games?

The German national team’s games are broadcast on free TV by ZDF and RTL. RTL also has broadcasting rights for all games in the final tournament without German participation. If you want to follow the Nations League away from the DFB team, you have to use the paid streaming service DAZN. On November 22nd, UEFA will draw the quarter-finals of the Nations League.
