Surf & rock: top longboard tournament and recital by Fernando Ruiz Díaz

For Fer it is one more day in Chapatrapa, the spa that shelters him during these magical days. She enjoys watching her daughter (8 years old) surf the waves and enjoys the Ala Moana Longboard Fest, the competition that was the first date of the longboard circuit organized by the Argentine Surf Association and was presented by Quiksilver and Roxy. But, suddenly, Ruiz Díaz decides something that was not in the plans: go up to an improvised stage and play some songs. Dressed in a poncho, the charismatic national rock frontman captivates the beach. Many come, they cannot believe that he is playing for free, despite the fact that at night he has a recital in a Mar del Plata theater. And he makes the guitar roar and with his big voice, he makes an impact, especially with his hits like Magia Veneno and En los Sueños, a song that talks about the sea. Everyone lights up at the choruses, even the surfers who just finished competing in this tournament. “I am especially grateful to them, who make magic in the water. I am a cornalo (means “beginner” in surfing language), with my longboard, but as Señor Flavio told me, the best surfer is not the one who surfs waves the best, but the one who has the most fun in the water”, he reflects and receives the closed applause of the people while he finishes off his performance with a phrase at the top of his voice. “Hold on to surf and beach culture, man.”

It was a beautiful day in Chapa, with heat, good waves, many spectators and an interesting level of surfing, with several revelations in the water. Especially Nicolás Ludovino, the 21-year-old from Mar del Plata who moved to Pipa, Brazil four years ago. “I was right here on vacation, without boards or anything, but they told me there was a longboard tournament, they lent me everything and I decided to sign up. It was beautiful to be able to win it. In Brazil I won a tournament in 2019 and I’m doing quite well, but I’m happy to be able to do it here and have this recognition. Hopefully these longboard tournaments can continue to be held in the country, because there is a lot of talent”, says the tall athlete who surprised us with his style of walking the board and doing various maneuvers so typical of the magicians of this modality (boards of more than 2m75 ) that resurfaces strongly from a style different from that of short boards, much more explosive and radical.

Ludovino was pleased because, in addition to winning, he beat the favorite in the final. We are talking about Surfiel Gil, the talented surfer who has been dominating this category for years and in 2019 scratched the bronze medal in the debut of surfing in the Pan American Games. The ninth son of Daniel Gil, a pioneer of this sport in the country, celebrated with Nicolás, in another demonstration of the camaraderie that exists in surfing. Both left holding hands while surfing one last wave together and after the hug on the beach, Surfiel was one of the two who lifted the champion on his shoulders. Agostina Pellizzari prevailed in ladies, after defeating Evelyn Gontier. In Junior, the victory went to Marcos Calandra, followed by Valentino Zazzeri. The event, which was accompanied by Ford and its trucks, key to moving logistics to the point located on Route 11, distributed 40,000 pesos in prizes and 60,000 in vouchers to pick up clothes at Ala Moana Surfshop. This is how a day of surf & rock ended to repeat as soon as possible…
