Wirtz fit again: Nagelsmann trains with all players
Florian Wirtz missed the first training sessions in Frankfurt due to an infection. Two days before the game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, the super talent from Bayer Leverkusen is back.
Two days before the Nations League game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, national coach Julian Nagelsmann was able to train with all the remaining national players for the first time. Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz was also present at the non-public session on Thursday morning. The 21-year-old had taken a break in Frankfurt/Main in the past few days due to an infection.
Nagelsmann’s squad for the end of the year on Saturday (8.45 p.m./RTL) in Freiburg and three days later in Budapest against Hungary (8.45 p.m./ZDF) still includes 22 professionals, including three goalkeepers. Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller left on Wednesday with muscular problems, but the national coach decided not to call him up again. According to UEFA rules, he is allowed to have 23 players in his squad.
In the Nations League it is still a matter of winning the group for the DFB selection, Germany has already been confirmed as a participant in the quarter-finals in March. The declared goal is to qualify for the final tournament in summer 2025, which could take place in Germany.
Nagelsmann announced at the beginning of the week that he would be willing to compromise on the line-up because of the comfortable starting position and that he would be able to rest players who were under a lot of strain. It is therefore unclear whether, for example, Wirtz will play in Freiburg after his recovery.
