Javier Milei withdrew his delegation from the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, rejecting the “2030 agenda”

The Government of Javier Milei ordered on Wednesday that the entire Argentine delegation withdraw from the negotiations for climate change mitigation at the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP29) taking place in Azerbaijan.

The decision is part of the rejection of the “2030 agenda” of the libertarian administration, a situation that bothers companies that operate in the country and promote cleaner production.

A small delegation of Argentine officials was at the summit, but they were ordered to suspend their agenda and return to Buenos Aires immediately.

The Argentine representatives left so as not to endorse what was decided there, according to reports. From Buenos Aires, Milei retweeted some messages that celebrated this measure.

Javier Milei ordered the withdrawal of the Argentine mission from COP29.

The negotiations of the COP29 They have a clear focus on climate financing and the need to increase the resources that developed countries contribute for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

In any case, this abandonment does not imply that Argentina withdraws from the Paris Agreement to stop climate warming.

This requires a more extensive process, which can last up to a year, and which would imply that it ceases to be part of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

What was the first measure approved by COP29

One of the first measures adopted in the COP29 was the approval of the rules for the international carbon market, after a long and tense negotiating session to approve the agenda.

The new rules primarily concern countries – especially rich polluters – that seek to offset their emissions by buying credits from nations that have reduced greenhouse gases beyond what they had promised.

The adopted criteria regulate the methodology for calculating the number of credits that a given project can generate, as well as what happens if the stored carbon is lost, for example if the forest that served as backup burns down.
