Lindsey Vonn wants to get back on the slopes – with an artificial knee
The ski world is looking forward to the next spectacular comeback. The American Lindsey Vonn announces her return. She only had a serious operation at the beginning of the year.
The former downhill dominator Lindsey Vonn is planning a comeback in the Alpine Ski World Cup – at the age of 40. This was announced by the Olympic champion and the American association.
Lindsey Vonn with multiple cruciate ligament tears
Vonn ended her successful career in 2019, which was also marked by many injuries including repeated cruciate ligament tears. She had an artificial knee joint inserted just last February.
“My goal is to enjoy this, and hopefully that path will lead me to World Cup racing,” she said in an interview with The New York Times. “I wouldn’t be back on the US Ski Team if I didn’t have intentions.” This weekend she will take part in training sessions with the American team in Copper Mountain (Colorado) for the first time.
Third most successful World Cup racer
With 82 victories, Vonn is the third most successful World Cup racer in history after her compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin (97 victories) and the Swede Ingemar Stenmark (86 victories).
It was only at the start of the ski season in Sölden at the end of October that skier Marcel Hirscher also celebrated his comeback after five years. The technology specialist no longer drives for Austria, but for the Netherlands, his mother’s home country.
